In this post I want to share what I’ve discovered about eating healthy. Hope it helps you the same way it has helped me.
Cooking HEALTHY for BEGINNERS
The 1st thing I discovered is that I don’t cook enough. With the invention of the microwave and the convenience of food that goes in one it is easy to forget we have an oven. That is why I’m posting about 5 eating tips to a healthy lifestyle. Start reading the labels. You will be shocked to see up to 300 mg of salt to a single serving.
Look at the serving size, take bread for example. You would assume 1 serving is 2 slices. But some makers put a single slice for a serving just to lower the salt on the label to fool you into thinking theirs is healthier for you. Go fresh whenever possible, the color and aroma actually pleases the senses and you don’t notice the salt is missing.
Weigh your portions. This is a hard one for me. But carrots, celery and hummus are a good go to for the before meal cravings. This does get easier and you will notice a difference.
Benefits of OIL FREE cooking.
By not using vegetable oils you are reducing the amount of calories and fat that you digest. Seeing as how you don’t have any idea how much fat and empty calories you are eating because it is based on how much you use and the absorption rate of the food you are cooking in it.
Vegetable oils are pressed from corn, safflower, palm, coconut, and so on leaving behind the beneficial fiber and vitamins. But if you read the labels you will find words like monoglycerides or diglycerides. These are extra fats used to prolong shelf life and prevent the processed oils from separating and are known to increase the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke.
My personal benefits of oil free cooking include lower blood pressure, improved circulation and a slower heart rate which is reducing my increased risk for a heart attack and stroke. Plus I just feel better all around with more energy and stamina. I’m not gasping for air at the top of a flight of stairs like I used to.
Healthy ways to cook BEEF
If you are like me you do not want to give up red meat. But it is proven that not only is it unhe
althy but the way we enjoy it makes it deadly. However, not all red meat is like this. If instead of that sirloin have liver with onoins and garlic simmered in red wine with a baked potato and a spinach salad. Now you have a satifying meal with nutrients that the body can absorb leaving you feeling full and content.
Other healthy ways to cook beef is to bake it on a rack allowing the fat to drip out and creating a steam to keep the meat tender and juicy. Try steaming your next roast in a pressure cooker. Quarter your potatoes and onions along with carrots and any seasoning you want. Put your seasonings on the bottom in your water and wait for the magic. The steam with all the flavor penetrates cooking and seasoning evenly.
This one really sucks for me, but I still do it. Avoid high heat flash cooking. A 2-4 minute porter house was just the ticket. Cook it for 1 minute or so, flip it for another minute or so. Just enough to brown the edges and warm it through. Perfection when there is a small puddle of blood sitting on top when it is served. However; high heat has a chemical reaction between the nutrients and other compounds within the meat that produces byproducts that are linked to several types of cancer.
Make it Extra Virgin Olive Oil
When you must use an oil be sure to make it Extra Virgin Olive Oil. It is the only oil cold pressed from the fruit of the tree; olives. An olive oil that has impurities will become plain olive oil and will be blended with other oils that are pressed from the plant and processed. That is when they put in the not so good glycerides.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil is like the fresh squeezed orange juice of oils. It has healthy monounsaturated fats which are resistant to high heat and polyunsaturated fats like omega-6 and omega-3. It also contains considerable amounts of antioxidents which could reduce your risk for chronic diseases. So if you must oil make it Extra Virgin Olive.
Why I eat healthy.
The reason I am choosing to eat healthier is for my family first and myself second. I want to live long enough to see my grand children married and some great granchildren. I have adesire to live to be 100 but I also want a quality of life while doing it. I do not want to be in a nursing home all alone in a dirty depends because I am to weak to get myself to the toilet. Hope you find these tips useful and as I learn it I will post it. And may you have reasons to eat healthy similar to why I eat healthy.
